Practice Educator/ Assessor outline: Practice educator requirements and scope
If you are new to mentoring we would recommend that you speak to your line manager in the first instance about attending a formal programme of study at DMU (click here), usually, colleagues who wish to become a practice educator / clinical assessor would undertake a CPD style short course, delivered by DMU academic staff at your place of work. It is expected that those new to the role would benefit from a ‘full’ course, whereas those colleagues whom have some experience would simply require orientation to DMU paperwork and processes ( this is the subject of the first powerpoint below).
The full content is planned top be delivered over four 2 hour slots, at a time convenient to all – this will be face to face delivery to encourage debate and discussion.
- Practice Educator /Clinical Assessor introduction and briefing (ppt)
- Student-Clinical-Support lecture content (ppt)

The guide also outlines roles and responsibilities, and a ‘how to’ guide’ on the conduct of assessments, discussions, and tutorial support / meetings schedule.
Students are encouraged to record all of their clinical experience here: RCE (Year 1)
