If you would like to proceed with having students in your area and you work in the private, voluntary or independent sector, please contact Rachael Carroll to arrange a meeting; Rachael.carroll@dmu.ac.uk.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for both parties to ask questions about what a student placement would look like in your area of practice. Once this has been agreed, the Placement Profile and Health and Safety agreement are completed and the service agreement is sent to the placement area. You will then be ready to accept student nurses and the work-based learning team will be informed.

If you work in the NHS and would like to have student nurses, please contact your Practice Learning Team.

The Process

If you decide to become a placement for student nurses, you may have questions about how the process works. The information that follows describes the process from when your area has been assessed as suitable for student nurses and the initial placement profile and health and safety agreement have been completed.

Allocations

Once you have agreed to have a student nurse in your area of practice and the placement profile and health and safety agreement have been received, the work-based learning team are informed that the placement is ready to be used. They will allocate you the number of students and the year of student that was agreed with the Practice Learning Lead. The number and year of students that you receive will be reviewed with you bi-annually when the placement profile is updated or before if appropriate. Unless the work-based learning team are informed otherwise, your area will be allocated according to this information each time students are placed. Notification will be sent to you.

Nursing students are placed in NHS trusts and private, voluntary and independent sector areas so that at the point of registration, they have been exposed to multiple health care settings. Students from all years and all fields of practice are allocated to placements on a quarterly basis by the work- based learning team. It is our intention to give you as much notification as possible that you have been allocated a student and aim to inform you six weeks before placement commences. Students are informed four weeks before placement commences.

If you are unable to accept a nursing student on placement at any time please let the practice learning lead for your area know as soon as possible. For private, voluntary and independent sector placements please inform Rachael Carroll at Rachael.carroll@dmu.ac.uk.

The Placement Team can be contacted at hlsplacements@dmu.ac.uk.
